Link building is the process of building high quality links to your website. Effective link building is the key to success in internet marketing. Successful internet marketers invest considerable time on this activity.

Now the question is what exactly is a “high quality link”? It is very important to understand the answer to this question from the perspective of the search engines. We need to understand the important factors search engines consider when judging the value of a link.

Domain authority accounts for the single largest chunk of the Google algorithm. This is one of the reasons why some pages with few links rank highly than others. These pages are usually on a trusted domain.

External link (links from a different domain) carries more weight than an internal link (link from one page of a site to another). It definitely makes sense. Search engines value other’s opinion about you more than your opinion about yourself. Having said that, it is not advisable to do away with good internal link structure with appropriate anchor text.

The anchor text (also known as link label, link text and link title) is the clickable text in a hyperlink. Anchor text is very important in link building. It is always advisable to go for an exact match anchor text instead of focusing on just including the keyword. However it makes sense to include the keyword too.

Search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing use an iterative link analysis algorithm. Google calls it PageRank. As per these algorithms links are treated as votes. Pages with more links carry more influence on the internet. If you get link from these pages, it is good for your blog or website.

TrustRank is a link analysis technique for semi-automatically separating useful webpages from spam. The basic tenet of this technique is that the internet’s trustworthy pages tend to be closely linked together. Spam is more pervasive outside this group. By calculating an iterative metric which only flows juice from trusted seed sources, TrustRank can be used to predict whether a site is a good quality site or a spam site.

It is always advisable to have a diversity of domains linking to your website or blog. This has immense positive effect on rankings. Getting a link from a site which has already linked to you in the past is not valuable as a getting the link from a new domain. It makes immense sense to get links from websites that have earned diverse link profiles.

Search engines perform topical analysis to determine whether two web pages cover similar subject. They use automated topical-classification systems to identify neighborhoods around particular topics and count links more or less based on the behavior they see as accretive or to their quality of ranking results.

Link building is a very important activity and deserves your time and attention. By incorporating the above-mentioned tips into your link building strategy, you are sure to improve the ranking of your website on various search engines.
