These are words to live by if I have ever heard words to live by. I really enjoy the work of Zig Ziglar. I also enjoy the work of Denis Waitley, Brian Tracy, Earl Nightingale and others but this line from Ziglar has really changed my life.
It is common knowledge, if you listen to and read this material, that you cannot bring your own self-concept up by bringing other people down. The first time I heard that idea was from Brian Tracey. But when Ziglar puts it that way, it gives the idea a whole new meaning.
Bring your own self-concept up, by bring other people’s self-concept up. Compliment people frequently.
When I was younger, I have a very hard time complimenting people. I would say things like “well it probably wasn’t that hard” or “Yeah that was an okay job” I was afraid of giving compliments to people. But like everything else, it takes practice and after the first few times, I started to get very good at it. At my last job, I began looking for people to compliment and thank for a good job.
I was not a supervisor or manager, but I certainly acted and looked like one. I would see a stocker that I thought was doing a good job and I would say “that aisle looks spectacular” or someone talking to a customer doing a good job of calming down someone who was irate, I would say “that was an excellent way of calming that person down, you seem to have very good people skills.”
