Work on building trust with the people that work with you. People need to feel that they can trust their leader. Make things easy for people to understand. If you can take difficult topics and talk about them in a way that everyone can understand, that will be a benefit to you as a leader. People need someone who can explain things, and if you can do that in a way that doesn’t make them feel inferior, they will love you.

Accept your mistakes. Even great leaders are wrong sometimes. Good leaders own it and communicate it to the employees. Doing this lets others know that you are only human and make mistakes just as everyone else does. It might not look like a good leadership trait, but it does breed serious loyalty when done right.

One principle of successful leadership is to consider all points of view. You need to examine situations from the perspective of others. Even though you might not agree with another’s point of views, show respect and attentively listen as this perspective is shared with you. Never be close-minded to new information or new ideas.

Use mistakes as an opportunity for your employees to grow. Discussing what happened with the entire team may lead to some great ideas for preventing such a thing from happening again.

Recognize the employees who consistently do a good job. Don’t focus on problems or spend too much time trying to strengthen weak employees. When the squeaky wheel always gets the grease, being a weak employee becomes motivation to get more help from the boss. Try to surround yourself with your strongest employees and help them grow.

Significant localization has occurred in the management teams of foreign subsidiaries of many successful MNCs. It is advisable to embrace the practice of rotation. This policy gives an opportunity for the company to develop global leaders.

It has been observed that nationals from key growth markets like China,India,Brazil and Russia are underrepresented in the leadership ranks of many US and Europe based MNCs. It can work against these companies in the long run. It is advisable to hire future global leaders from these countries.

While it is good to be an expert in one field, ignoring what is happening around you can be dangerous. For a business to succeed, functional heads have to work together and keep their focus on the customer. The focus should always be on what needs to be done to enhance customer experience.
